Emotional Historians is a series of generative poetry workshops with well over 1000 registrants to date. These are small, highly interactive Zoom classes, around 20 people per section. All experience levels are welcome. Here’s a class description:

In the world of people, celebration is often laced with melancholy, joy is a border that surrounds sorrow, and fear is usually one doorbell away from bravery. So, how the fork can we construct poems that acknowledge a complicated and dynamic world? How do we avoid writing that transforms us into caricatures? How do we convey what it feels like to be us, alive at the onset of a new millennium? If the job of an artist is that of an emotional historian, then we must create poems that are as multi-dimensional and layered as the people who write them. If we’re to properly archive, we must ask ourselves not whether this is a great poem, but rather, is this today’s poem?  πŸ“šπŸ“πŸŽˆ

Frequently asked questions

It’s a great workshop for writers who want to build literary community, read new authors, find new influences, and who hope to finish a workshop with six new drafts to feel excited about.

The cost is a sliding scale from $200-$325. There are also some (full and partial) scholarships available (priority will be given to writers who are undocumented, BIPOC, and/or trans).

That’s so nice of you!!! The demand for tuition assistance is always high, and scholarship sponsorship has gone a long way to make this community as accessible as possible. Scholarships run on the same sliding scale as the class ($200-$325), and are ALWAYS appreciated.

This is true! But I’d add that it’s much less scary when everyone does it together. And just to be clear, the mandatory share out can be as small as one line from your poem.

The Emotional Historians online workshop began in March of 2020, and since that time, we’ve had well over 1000 registrants, many of them repeat students. In addition, I’ve been teaching creative writing to people of all ages since 2007.
